The easiest way to tell if you really have a 1973 Snake or Mongoose is to look at the oil pan on the base. If it has a rivet head in the middle to hold the engine in it is a '70 Snake or '71 Snake II casting. See the pic below:
The 1973 base has the engine cast in so it has no need for the rivet. See the pic below:
The underside of the roof will have 6969 cast in it as well. A 1974 Top Eliminator used the same top casting as the 1973 Snake and Mongoose, but the bottom of the base is different. See the pic below:
